Is age really one of the issues when participating in events and have fun? To Ms Esther Toh who is currently 66-year-old, she feels that age is not a hindrance to her but instead, what matters to her, is the willingness to put in the effort to practice for the events.
“Age is not really a problem. It’s just yourself whether you want to actually practice,” said Ms Esther.
Many of the participants and volunteers in the annual Chingay event consists of people from young and old, with varying abilities.

Chingay is one example among the many events that encourage volunteers from all walks of life to take part and be part of the event, regardless of their age and experience in performing.

Contrary to Ms Esther, Ms Mavis Yong, who is 64-year-old this year, has a different opinion on this issue.

She feels that being a pioneer when participating in events is a challenge to some, especially those who seldom exercise. Being a pioneer means one will feel tired easily and the endless walks and practice for the event can take a toll on their body.

Recalling an incident, she witnessed, she says: “Last week, I saw one (incident) because there’s a lot of walking so I think generally, you have to exercise. If you don’t exercise, then it’s very challenging for people who are more senior, especially if (you) look at this lady, it would be very challenging,” said Ms Mavis.

Despite all the challenges faced when volunteering, Ms Mavis still encourages others of her age or older to participate and join them in the fun as well.
Ms Esther also added on saying that if you enjoy performing for events, people are welcomed to join them and participate.

Age is not everything. What matters is the mindset that defines everything. As long as you set your mind to do it and is determined to do it well, you’ll definitely achieve what you want to do.
