Chingay celebrates 200 years of Singapore

The first-ever 270m long painting commemorating Singapore Bicentennial was revealed at the Chingay rehearsals.

The painting shows the “past, present, and future of Singapore” from the moment Raffles stepped foot into Singapore as a fishing village to the current multicultural metropolis it is today. It is also a visual depiction of the future of Singapore, drawn by Singaporeans of all backgrounds.

This year has influenced the performers as they feel that they can showcase their organisation. One such performer is Gwen Ho, 25, who said: “I think it’s a good exposure to the public, especially by the 200-year of the bicentennial because it’s one of the platforms for CheerForce to display what actually is cheerleading and clear up some of the misunderstandings of what is cheerleading to the public itself.

To some, it has shown that Singaporeans can exist without fear, but with pride. Jerry Low, 26, said: “I feel proud of it because it's been every year without fear. 200 years shown (in Chingay) so we can remember the past memories of Singapore.”

For the futuristic DNA finale of Chingay, performers from previous acts come together as one to celebrate the vision towards building Singapore for the next 200 years before ending the performance with fireworks.

You can catch the Chingay performance on Feb 15 and 16, at 8 pm. More information at https://www.chingay.org.sg/.
